Firefox Tabbing Problems on List Boxes

Sunday, July 29th, 2007, 1:38 am

My favorite web browser by far is Firefox for many reasons. It is one of the most standards compatible browser in existence, it has very useful add-ons (i.e. Firebug), and it is almost completely customizable. However, I found one flaw this week that was absolute driving me insane. Whenever I encountered a web form I could tab over every text field but not drop down lists or list boxes (normally used in contact forms asking for state or country you live in). Firefox would skip right over these form elements as if they never existed on the page!

Was this a regular Mac thing? I tested the same pages using Safari and Camino and tabbing was not an issue. I also tested Firefox on a Windows machine and noticed the problem did not exist there either. It was only happening on Firefox installed on Macs. I was determined to find out what was going on.

From Vista to OSX

Thursday, July 19th, 2007, 4:47 pm

I have been using Microsoft Windows since Windows 98. I learned how to use the whole Macromedia suite on a Windows machine and did not know until about a year ago that most designers prefer using a Mac over a PC. I did get a MacBook Pro but I didn’t necessarily jump on the Mac bandwagon because everyone else was doing it. I love Windows. I am comfortable on Windows. I know practically everything there is to know about Windows and I have learned practically every keyboard shortcut on a Windows machine and took a lot of pride in that. I also fell in love with Vista and bought an HP desktop (Model: m7750n HP with the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5200+ 2.60Ghz and 2GB of RAM). It is a wonderful machine. So why did I switch? Why am I a Mac guy now?

Well…I never thought I would ever make the switch. I felt Macs were overpriced and I just didn’t see a benefit in getting a Mac. That is until I had no choice but to learn how to use one.

When I was applying to work as a web designer I noticed most design firms had Mac environments. I knew I needed to learn how to use a Mac if I wanted to work in design. Luckily for me, a friend had a G4 he sold to me for only $100. (Thanks Jordi!) I took the machine home and plugged it in and had my first mesmerizing experience with OSX. Wow! What eye candy! Woot! So I immediately fell in love with the interface. I loved the customization options and loved how easy it was to use.

I got hired at 1105 Media, Inc. and met some wonderful web designers who each own a MacBook Pro. When I saw that they were running Windows XP using Parallels I was sold. I knew I had to get a Mac. I felt like running to the store that day.

Tomorrow will be 2 weeks that I have owned a MacBook Pro and I must say it has been a wonderful experience. There are so many benefits to having a Mac. I will get into more detail later.

I love this blogging stuff. It is fun.
